Help with measurements, permissions, recordings, calibration, and the sound-level camera.
Getting started
- Open Decibel Pro and select Measure.
- Tap Start Measurement and allow microphone access when prompted.
- Keep the iPhone microphone uncovered and place the device in a stable position.
- Choose a scene such as Home, Office, Commute, or Concert to label the session.
- Tap Stop when finished. The session and its local recording will appear in History.
Measurements save a compressed field recording on your iPhone by default. Analysis, history, and recordings are not uploaded automatically.
Troubleshooting
Microphone access is denied
Open the iOS Settings app, find Decibel Pro, and enable Microphone access. Return to the app and start the measurement again.
The reading seems too low, too high, or differs from another app
- Make sure a case, hand, or surface is not covering the iPhone microphones.
- Keep the iPhone and comparison device together, with the same orientation and distance from the sound source.
- Compare average readings in a steady sound field rather than rapidly changing current values.
- Different iPhone models, microphone paths, response weighting, and app reference offsets can produce different results.
Use Advanced Calibration only with a trusted, calibrated external sound level meter. Consumer apps are not a reliable calibration reference for one another.
Measurement pauses after switching apps or locking the iPhone
In Decibel Pro Settings, enable Background Measurement & Recording before starting the session. Phone calls and other audio interruptions may still pause measurement; return to the app to continue.
A recording is missing or will not play
Recordings are stored locally with their measurement. If a measurement is deleted, its recording is deleted too. Check available device storage and complete a new measurement to test recording again.
The camera or watermarked media is unavailable
Enable Camera and Microphone access for capture, and allow Decibel Pro to add media to Photos. These permissions are managed in iOS Settings. The app creates media only when you take a photo or record a video.
FAQ
Can Decibel Pro replace a professional sound level meter?
No. Readings are consumer-grade estimates affected by the iPhone model, microphone condition, case, placement, and environment. Do not use them for occupational certification, enforcement, engineering acceptance, medical diagnosis, or legal evidence.
What do Fast and LAeq mean?
The current value uses a Fast time response so it can follow changing sound. LAeq is an energy-average A-weighted level over the measured session and is usually more stable for comparisons.
How does exposure guidance work?
The app uses a reference model of 8 hours at 85 dBA, with suggested duration halved for each 3 dB increase. It is general hearing-protection guidance, not an occupational exposure determination.
Does Decibel Pro upload recordings, photos, or videos?
No automatic content upload is built into the app. Measurement analysis and recordings stay on the device. Watermarked photos and videos are saved to the system photo library when you capture them.
How do I delete my data?
Delete an individual measurement from History, or use Delete All Measurement Data in Settings. Associated recordings are deleted with the measurement data. Photos and videos saved to Photos are separate; delete those in the Photos app. See the Privacy Policy for details about local storage, sharing, and deletion.
